Part Four: The Future of Long-Term Water Planning
Welcome to Part Four of Mustang’s new education series designed to help our community understand where our water comes from, how growth is affecting supply, and what it means for the future of North Texas.

The Future of Long-Term Water Planning
Mustang understands that delivering reliable water service in the years ahead will depend on strengthening every part of its water portfolio. Across the country, communities are reaching similar conclusions as they prepare for growing populations, changing weather patterns, and increasing demand. Many states, including California, Arizona, Colorado, and Florida, have expanded conservation, stormwater capture, aquifer storage, and advanced treatment to support long‑term needs.
Mustang has long planned for a future supported by multiple water sources, and national conversations are now moving in a similar direction. We know what it takes to build reliability, and we have been putting those principles into practice for decades. We also know that long‑term reliability comes from having several sources that can support customers through different conditions, not depending on just one.
The Building Blocks of Water Reliability
Mustang uses several strategies to keep its water systems strong and dependable. We take a comprehensive approach because no single tool can meet the needs of a growing region on its own. Each strategy adds something unique, and together they create an adaptable water supply that can adjust as conditions change and support the needs of a growing service area.
Conservation focuses on using water wisely so existing sources can serve customers for longer periods. It includes everyday habits, efficient fixtures, and community programs that help households and businesses use water more effectively. Conservation is often the fastest and most affordable way to extend supplies, which is why it works best as a long‑term strategy rather than a short‑term response.
Stormwater capture saves rainwater and puts it to work instead of letting it wash away. This lets communities capture more of the water they receive during heavy rainfall. That stored water can then be used during dry spells when less water is available.
Aquifer storage and recovery saves treated water underground when more water is available, then brings it back when demand is higher. It acts like a natural storage bank that lets communities handle changes from season to season or year to year. This approach strengthens protection against drought, meets higher summer demand, and creates a buffer that supports long‑term reliability.
Advanced treatment and water reuse rely on proven technology to purify water to very high standards. Reuse adds a consistent and dependable source of water that can support lakes and groundwater and is less vulnerable to weather‑related changes.
These strategies do not replace lakes or groundwater. They support one another and create a resilient water portfolio that can adjust as conditions change. This kind of balanced planning is becoming the national standard and reflects the same principles that have guided Mustang’s strategy for decades.
Mustang’s Commitment to a Reliable Water Future
Mustang’s planning already reflects many of the strategies used by water providers across the country, but our work is shaped by the needs of a fast‑growing service area. We continue to strengthen every part of our water portfolio because reliability is not a single project, it is an ongoing responsibility.
As growth continues, Mustang is evaluating opportunities that align with national practices. This includes continued investment in conservation, exploring future options for advanced treatment, and supporting regional efforts that expand and diversify supplies. These steps ensure that Mustang remains prepared for future demand and continue to set a higher standard for long-term reliability in Texas.
Planning early is essential, and Mustang is leading the way. By investing ahead of growth, Mustang is building a resilient water portfolio that can support customers as development, conditions, and community needs evolve. It is a commitment rooted in responsibility and readiness, and it is what keeps Mustang delivering the dependable service our communities expect and deserve.
