Smart Meter FAQ
We’re replacing aging meters with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters to improve accuracy, reduce water loss, and give customers better insight into their water usage.
The new meters automatically transmit readings to our system a few times per day. This eliminates the need for a technician to drive by your home to collect data, which was how many of our older radio meters worked.
Yes — but at very low levels. The meters use brief, low-powered radio frequency (RF) signals, similar to those used by baby monitors, garage door openers, and Wi-Fi routers.
Yes. The RF emissions from AMI meters are:
- Far below the limits set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
- Much lower than common household devices like cell phones or microwaves
- Intermittent — the meter only transmits data a few times per day, for milliseconds at a time
- Located outside, typically near the street, further reducing exposur
Organizations like the American Cancer Society and the FCC have reviewed the safety of smart meters and found no evidence of harm from the low-level RF they emit.
