Information about Drought Stage 1

Under this stage, customers will be requested to conserve water through mandatory and voluntary measures, and to comply with restrictions on certain non-essential water use. Specific measures to be implemented during the stage will be determined by Mustang Special Utility District (SUD).

The goal of Stage 1 is to raise public awareness of potential drought and water emergency problems. The goal for water use reduction under Stage 1 is five percent (5%) of total daily water use that otherwise would have occurred in the absence of growth contingency measures. If circumstances warrant, Mustang SUD can set a goal for greater or lesser water sue reduction.

Know Your Water Days

Efficient watering helps keep our community’s water supply strong! Stage 1 of our Drought Contingency Plan allows twice-a-week watering on designated days. Check the schedule below to find your watering days, and remember—watering outside of these times may result in fines.

🔹 Tip: Your lawn absorbs water best with short, deep soakings. Stick to 10-minute cycles instead of increasing time per session.

Water 1 Inch: What does that mean?

A ruler measuring grass height next to a sprinkler spraying water on a lawn.

It’s easy to say that 1 inch of water is all your yard needs weekly to achieve the lush green look most homeowners (and HOAs) covet, but what does that mean? Watering your lawn 1 inch looks a little different for everyone, and depends on a few factors including:

  • Lawn Size
  • Sprinkler location
  • Sprinkler output

To help you determine what watering 1 inch looks like for your lawn, all you need is a little bit of time and a rain gauge or a straight-sided container (like a can). It would be helpful to have a few gauges or cans on hand to place throughout your irrigation zones, but you can also move the gauge throughout the zones as the system cycles through.

Place the rain gauge, or can, in a central location in the irrigation zone. Allow the sprinklers to run and keep an eye on the amount of water collecting in the gauge or can. The amount of time it takes to fill the gauge to 1/4 inch is approximately the amount of sprinkler time required to water that specific zone for 1/4 inch. You can then continue to measure or use the ¼ inch to estimate the amount of time it will take for 1 inch of water (about 4 times the amount of time).

Repeat this process for every zone in your irrigation system and set the controller accordingly for your designated days.  Be mindful of water pooling and runoff, you may find that you have some areas of your lawn receiving water more quickly than others. Simple adjustments to your sprinkler heads can balance water coverage, reducing water waste while achieving a lush green lawn.
