Information About Drought Stage 2

The need for Stage 2 is primarily the result of extraordinary demand from landscape irrigation exceeding the supply and treatment capacity within the system. Although hundreds of millions of dollars in current projects are under construction by both Mustang and our wholesale water provider, Upper Trinity Regional Water District, area growth is pushing the system to its available limit. Our objective at this time is to ensure service reliability for customers' everyday household use.

Know Your Water Days

Efficient watering helps keep our community’s water supply strong! Stage 2 of our Drought Contingency Plan allows once-a-week watering on designated days. Check the schedule below to find your watering days, and remember—watering outside of these times may result in fines.

🔹 Tip: Your lawn absorbs water best with short, deep soakings. Stick to 10-minute cycles instead of increasing time per session.

Effective immediately, customers must follow the 1-day-per-week watering schedule outlined below:

  • No automatic irrigation or hose-end sprinkler use between 6:00AM to 8:00PM.
  • You can use hand-held hoses, drip irrigation, and soaker hoses at any time for landscaping and foundation watering.
  • Vehicle washing is allowed on designated watering days, but only with a hand-held bucket or hose with a shut-off nozzle for quick rinsing.

Water 1 Inch: What does that mean?

A ruler measuring grass height next to a sprinkler spraying water on a lawn.

It’s easy to say that 1 inch of water is all your yard needs weekly to achieve the lush green look most homeowners (and HOAs) covet, but what does that mean? Watering your lawn 1 inch looks a little different for everyone, and depends on a few factors, including:

  • Lawn Size
  • Sprinkler location
  • Sprinkler output

To help you determine what watering 1 inch looks like for your lawn, you only need a little time and a rain gauge or a straight-sided container (like a can). Having a few gauges or cans on hand to place throughout your irrigation zones would be helpful, but you can also move the gauge throughout the zones as the system cycles through.

Place the rain gauge, or can, in a central location in the irrigation zone. Allow the sprinklers to run and monitor the water collecting in the gauge or can. The amount of time it takes to fill the gauge to 1/4 inch is approximately the amount of sprinkler time required to water that specific zone for 1/4 inch. You can then continue to measure or use the ¼ inch to estimate the time for 1 inch of water (about 4 times the amount of time).

Repeat this process for every zone in your irrigation system and set the controller accordingly for your designated days.  Be mindful of water pooling and runoff; you may find that some areas of your lawn receive water more quickly than others. Simple adjustments to your sprinkler heads can balance water coverage, reducing water waste while achieving a lush green lawn.
